VIFA - Blue Lagoon (Bláa lónið)

Blue Lagoon (Bláa lónið) is a sleep device used to mitigate the impacts of poor mental health. The device is designed to create a quieter, dimmer sleep inducing environment. This will allow for a more rested, uninterrupted sleep and will enable the user to boost their natural energy levels in the daytime. The product is named after the Icelandic  geothermal wellness spa, The Blue Lagoon.
Brand analysis - In selecting the Vifa brand for my project, a key component of the brief involved choosing a brand to influence the aesthetics. I meticulously analysed the Vifa website, delving into its design language and aesthetics.
CMF - I analysed the forms of different Vifa speakers and scrutinised their Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) details. This process provided valuable insights into the design language, guiding the development of the project.
Ideation - In the ideation stage, I explored diverse forms and concepts, allowing for creative experimentation. Through iterative processes, I refined these ideas, leading to the development of the final form.
3D print prototyping - Utilising 3D printing technology, I produced a variety of forms that underwent user testing to gather valuable feedback. This hands-on approach allowed for a tangible exploration of design possibilities, ensuring that user preferences and experiences played a pivotal role in the refinement process.
Final 3 concepts - I refined the ideation phase to three final concepts, rendering them to showcase their Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) aspects. User feedback was pivotal as I presented these concepts, ensuring the final design not only met aesthetic expectations but also resonated with users' preferences for a conclusive and user-centric outcome.
Final concept refinement - Opting for Concept 2 as the foundation, I meticulously refined the design to achieve the final form. This process involved optimising proportions, incorporating user feedback, and fine-tuning details for both aesthetic appeal and functionality.
Storyboard - Scenario of use
How it worksThe base of the device detects incoming sound waves in all directions and in response, uses speakers to send out identical sound waves with an inverted phase. Via the properties of destructive interference, the surrounding noise is cancelled out, creating a radius of calm and serenity within which the user is located. Similarly, in the top unit of the device, the amplitude, phase and wavelength of incident light waves are calculated. These are then counteracted, when the device  emits identical waves 180 degrees out of phase. This cancels out surrounding light and provides a dimmer and darker radius within which the user sleeps.
